Five Essential Tips for Solo Travel

Solo travel affords unparalleled freedom and self-discovery. From road trips across the American West to jet-setting to exotic locales, I’ve traversed the globe as a solo traveler. If embarking on a solo journey is uncharted territory, here are five essential tips to ensure a safe and memorable trip.
Share Your Itinerary and Check-In Regularly
Before your trip, give a family member or trusted friend a digital copy of your passport, travel insurance details, and an itinerary, even if plans are fluid. Use a location-sharing app like Life360, Glympse, or iPhone’s Find My. Check-in regularly and update as changes happen, ensuring someone knows your whereabouts.
Pack Light
As a solo traveler, I embrace carry-on only, typically a backpack and carry-on roller. Packing light is essential when navigating trains or small planes. Choose versatile clothes limit shoes, and pack laundry soap or sheets washing items on the go. Use hotel laundry services. I get blowouts at local salons instead of toting around multiple hair styling tools. If traveling for 1-2 weeks, pack for 3-4 days. Who cares if you wear something multiple times!
Choose Hotels Over Vacation Rentals
Unless you’re doing an extended stay, hotels are better for solo travelers because of added security through cameras and a staff presence. Locally owned boutique properties like Casa San Blas in Cusco or Friends Hotel & Rooftop in Quito offer unique stays and can connect you with reliable and phenomenal local guides. Whether you’re in a small inn or big brand accommodations, hotel staff often have invaluable insights into dining and activities.
Trust Your Instincts
Listen to your intuition. If something feels off, leave immediately. Avoid flashy clothes or blingy accessories. Aim to return to your hotel by dark, or at least within the same block. Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid being glued to your phone. Staying vigilant and trusting your gut are crucial for solo travel safety.
Try Small Group Travel or Supported Independent Travel
If you’re hesitant to go completely solo, adventure travel groups are great options. You’ll get the freedom of solo exploration, safety and camaraderie of small group travel, and access activities and destinations you might not tackle on your own. I trekked to Everest Base Camp with Dr. Jon’s Adventures and to Machu Picchu on the Salkantay Trail with Alpaca Expeditions.
I also explored Belize and Guatemala on a multi-destination tour with G Adventures. If you’re a fan of staying in one place as an independent traveler, book with UnTours for support ranging from booking an apartment to connecting with a local host. Unique resorts like Morrillo Beach Eco Resort in Panama or Anvil Bay Lodge in Mozambique are perfect for blending solo exploration in a remote area with a dose of luxury.
With these tips, you can confidently explore new destinations while enjoying solo travel adventures. Safe travels!
